Captain Doug

Graying Marine Services was established in 2021 by owner Douglas Goldhirsch. Doug is educated as a Naval Architect, has experience as a deep-sea mariner on power and sailing ships, and owned and operated a boatyard for over 20 years. From 2000 to 2021, Doug owned and operated Southport Island Marine on Southport Island in the Boothbay Region of Midcoast Maine. When Doug sold the boatyard, he established this new business to continue to use his expertise to help clients enjoy their time in the Boothbay Region and out on the water.

Douglas Goldhirsch has an extensive maritime resume!

• He built a boat with his father and brother at age 12! (Brother Bob still has it!) 

• Early experience on various small boats, power, and sail, including running a local island freight boat on the south shore of Long Island. 

• Graduated from Colgate University with a major in Geology and Oceanography. 

• Educated as a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer at the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, Class of 1985. 

• Student of Tall Ship Sailing with the Sea Education Association, and later employee with the same organization as Second Mate in their fleet of Tall Ships. Continues involvement in this tall ship organization as a corporate Overseer. 

• Worked as an Outward Bound Instructor for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School full time for over 8 years. 

• 21 years owning and operating Southport Island Marine here in the Boothbay Region. Under Doug’s leadership, this full-service boatyard built an outstanding reputation as a high-quality, very responsive repair yard. Their boatbuilding activities commanded the respect of clients and colleagues as well.
